Messaging

Enterprise-Grade SMSCSMSC ระดับองค์กร

The Short Message Service Centre (SMSC) is the routing and delivery engine for all SMS traffic on the MVNO network. Cipher Telecom's SMSC handles both Mobile-Originated (MO) and Mobile-Terminated (MT) SMS flows over standard MAP interfaces, with high TPS capacity for bulk enterprise messaging.

Key SMSC capabilities

  • MO/MT SMS routing — full routing via MAP Send-Routing-Info-for-SM, with HLR/HSS lookup integration.
  • High TPS — tested at several thousand transactions per second; horizontally scalable.
  • International SMS — GSM MAP interoperability for cross-network delivery; roaming SMS routing supported.
  • Delivery receipts — real-time delivery notifications back to the originating application via SMPP or HTTP callback.
  • Concatenated SMS — automatic reassembly of multi-part messages for long-form content.
  • Number portability — NP database lookup before routing to avoid mis-delivery.
Before

A complex SS7 MAP signaling stack embedded in every integration — requiring telecom engineers, signaling licences, and direct HLR access.

A standard HTTP POST to our REST API or an SMPP v3.4 connection — all SS7/MAP complexity is hidden behind a clean interface.

Interactive Services

Interactive USSD GatewayUSSD Gateway แบบ Interactive

Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) is the protocol behind the interactive menus triggered by short codes like *123#. It runs on the SS7 control plane, requires no data plan, and works on every mobile device — making it essential for prepaid self-service in markets where smartphone penetration is incomplete.

Cipher Telecom's USSD Gateway implements MAP USSD Phase 2, handling both Mobile-Initiated and Network-Initiated sessions. The gateway exposes the session as a standard REST callback, so your development team builds the menu logic in any web technology without knowing a byte of SS7.

Common USSD use cases

  • Balance check — *123# balance and data quota query
  • Top-up voucher redemption
  • Rate plan change and add-on purchase
  • Roaming activation
  • Operator customer-care menus

Modern Integration

The Modern Integration Layerชั้น Integration สมัยใหม่

Both the SMSC and USSD Gateway act as protocol-translation gateways: they absorb the full complexity of SS7/MAP signaling toward the host MNO and expose a clean, well-documented interface toward your IT systems.

Real-Time VAS Charging via Diameter Ro

Every SMS and every USSD transaction is authorized against the subscriber's balance in real time before delivery — using the OCS Diameter Ro interface. If the balance is insufficient, the transaction is rejected and an appropriate error or redirect is returned. No post-hoc debt accumulation on prepaid accounts.

This means the VAS layer and the core OCS share a single source of truth for subscriber credit — there is no separate VAS billing database to reconcile, no batch-period lag, and no risk of VAS charges silently bypassing the credit reservation loop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.01 What is SMPP and why do MVNOs use it?

SMPP (Short Message Peer-to-Peer) version 3.4 is the standard protocol used by applications, aggregators and enterprise SMS gateways to connect to an SMSC. It provides a persistent binary TCP connection with high throughput and delivery-receipt support. MVNOs use it because the entire A2P (Application-to-Person) SMS ecosystem — OTP providers, banking notifications, marketing platforms — already speaks SMPP. Supporting SMPP v3.4 means any enterprise can connect to the MVNO's messaging layer without custom integration.

Q.02 What is USSD and how is it different from SMS?

USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) is a real-time session-based signaling protocol that runs on the SS7 control plane — it does not use the data plane and requires no internet or data plan. A subscriber dials a short code (e.g. *123#) and receives an interactive menu. Unlike SMS, USSD sessions are stateful — you can navigate through multiple menus in a single session. SMS is a store-and-forward messaging service. USSD is an interactive session service. Both run on the same SS7 network but serve very different use cases.

Q.03 Can we build our USSD menu in a web framework without knowing SS7?

Yes — that is the exact purpose of the Cipher USSD Gateway. The gateway handles all SS7/MAP signaling toward the host MNO and converts each USSD session into HTTP callbacks to your application server. Your application returns a simple JSON response containing the menu text and navigation options. You can build USSD menus in Node.js, Python, PHP, or any web framework — with zero telecom knowledge required. We provide an SDK and reference implementation.
